Cinnamon-Scented Pine Cones Refreshed

It is not long now until we start to see Cinnamon Scented Pine Cones for sale outside grocery stores and in our favorite craft stores for the holidays.  I love the scent of cinnamon as you walk by and would not hesitate to pick up a bag on my way home.  I discovered last year that instead of tossing the pine cones and purchasing more each year you can refresh your existing pine cones or make your own for a fraction of the cost.

Tonight I am working on refreshing last years pine cones.  I placed the pine cones into a resealable plastic bag with enough room to seal the bag and toss around.  I added a few drops of Cinnamon essential oil to a small amount of water into a spray bottle, I shook the bottle and then sprayed the pine cones.  I closed the bag and shook and then repeated the process once more for each bag of pine cones.

This is a project you will want to start early as you will leave them sealed in the bag for 4 to 6 weeks to infuse the pine comes with the cinnamon scent.  You will shake the bag at least once a week to evenly distribute the scent.  You can also add cinnamon sticks and whole cloves to the bags for additional scent.

If I was starting from scratch with gathered pine cones I would place the pine cones on a foil lined baking sheet in a single layer and would bake them at 200 degrees for an hour to kill any bacteria that might be living in or on the pine cones.  If the pine cones have not completely opened the baking process should open them.  Once the pine cones have cooled you can continue the process I outlined above.
Place the cooled pine cones in a large resealable plastic bag. Make sure there is enough room to securely close the bag.
